Embrace the transformative impact of self-compassion as a cornerstone for boosting self-esteem. By treating yourself with kindness during moments of failure or doubt, you can replace harmful self-judgement with understanding and empathy.

Practising self-compassion enables you to view challenges as opportunities for growth rather than evidence of inadequacy, empowering you to rebuild a stronger, more resilient sense of self-worth.

The Fennel Model for Low Self-Esteem

Early life experiences shape our identity and beliefs. For example, childhood bullying or criticism can create lasting beliefs like "I am not good enough" or "They will never accept me." Negative core beliefs can also form in adulthood after unpleasant experiences.

These beliefs lead to rigid "rules for living," such as "I must always work hard, or they’ll think I’m useless," or "I have to help others, or they won’t accept me." While these rules offer some control, they become draining. Triggering events can expose core beliefs, resurfacing thoughts like "I am not good enough" and fueling fears about others’ judgments. These rules often protect us from facing painful beliefs.

We may overcompensate by working harder or meeting expectations, but this heightens anxiety and reinforces negative beliefs like "I truly am not good enough."

This self-critical cycle lowers mood, fosters defeat, and strengthens negative beliefs, potentially leading to persistent anxiety and low mood over time.

Exploring Cycles of Low Self-Esteem through CBT

We use Melanie Fennel's low self-esteem treatment model to help clients explore and address patterns that sustain their low self-esteem. Through collaboration, we identify key factors contributing to these cycles, aligning with core treatment goals.

Our approach helps clients understand the roots of their challenges and connect emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. This insight enables the development of a clear formulation of their difficulties, enhancing treatment outcomes.

Cognitive restructuring is central to our methodology. Together, we identify and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns. By tackling negative beliefs, we guide clients toward healthier perspectives, fostering emotional resilience and lasting growth.

We emphasise behavioural activation and engaging in positive, self-nurturing activities. Breaking the cycle of low mood and inactivity is crucial to overcoming negative predictions and self-criticism.

Encouraging meaningful, rewarding activities helps clients regain purpose and confidence. This proactive approach improves mood and supports realistic, attainable reconnection with values and aspirations.
